INITIATIVE

On this topic of initiative a very elaborate exercise I had to undertake bring up the leadership quotient of my team comes to my mind’s forefront. This occurred in an operational area when I had to go and takeover defences on Line of Control at the head of my battalion.

ENDURANCE

I can never forget the long nearly 100 km march our whole brigade undertook in 1991 from an area in West Bengal to South Sikkim. We were picked up in vehicles from our different unit locations….

EMPOWERMENT

When I shifted from Para Commando to regular infantry I was young with less than three years of service. Yet immediately I was put in charge of a Rifle Company deployed on active, in fact live, Line of Control where exchange of small arms fire (up to Medium Machine Gun) with Pak troops opposite was the norm almost 24 hours at one place or the other.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

After about five years of commissioned services I was selected by Military Secretary’s Branch at Army HQ for being part of the leadership team of a New Raising battalion. These new raising are amalgamation of officers and men from already existing units and have to lay down the bonding policies

Alongwith Judgement and Justice, Decisiveness is perhaps the most important quality a leader must possess

COURAGE

During our 18 months training in Indian Military Academy the main contribution to the excellent bearing we, erstwhile from civive streets, acquired was mainly from the Drill Square. The posture, the marching style, the endurance and the lean, mean look is mainly the product of Chetwode Drill Square!
