Major General Balraj Mehta: A Warrior's Journey

Joined Indian army
Commissioned into the Indian Army on 18 June 1983, Major General Balraj Mehta (Retd.) has exemplified unwavering loyalty and a deep sense of duty to the Nation. Throughout his distinguished career, his commitment to service, integrity, and excellence has remained steadfast. Over the decades, his experiences have not only sharpened his strategic and leadership skills but also strengthened his character—shaping him into a leader driven by purpose and guided by the highest ideals of military service.

Fortunate to have commanded the Bihar state level Republic Day parade at Gandhi Maidan, Patna. Here I can be seen accompanying His Excellency , The governor of Bihar Shre P. Venkatasubbaiah during his review of the parade on 26 January 1988.

In 2002, I had the privilege of being part of the official Directorate General of Military Intelligence (DGMI) delegation to the United States, where we engaged in high-level interactions with U.S. Armed Forces intelligence agencies.

Command of an Infantry Battalion
Took over command of the elite infantry battalion and after six months in a peace area , moved the unit to Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. After a highly successful command tenure was nominated for Higher Air Command course in the College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad.

I had the privilege of attending the Higher Air Command Course – 30, where I was awarded the prestigious Air Chief Marshal L. M. Katre Trophy for standing first in the course—an acknowledgment of academic excellence, leadership insight, and strategic thinking.

Command of an infantry brigade in operational Area
I was entrusted with the command of a strategically critical brigade deployed along the Line of Control (LoC)—a role that demanded operational acumen, composure under pressure, and sound leadership. Over a span of two and a half years, I led the brigade through an exceptionally successful tenure, marked by operational effectiveness and team cohesion. This contribution was recognized with the conferment of the Sena Medal for Distinguished Service in January 2013, a testament to commitment and excellence in a high-stakes environment.

Commanded an operational Sub Area
Under his leadership, the youngest sub area was swiftly organized to take on operational responsibilities. He fostered strong civil-military relations and ensured comprehensive management of rear area security and logistics. His exceptional leadership was evident during the complete rebuilding of military establishments after the devastating Cyclone Phailin in October 2013.

General Officer Commanding
Had the honor of commanding Uttarakhand Sub Area and 41 Sub Area, each for a year—culminating a distinguished 35-year career in the Indian Army. These tenures reflected the trust placed in my leadership and offered the opportunity to oversee critical strategic, administrative, and civil-military coordination in two key regions.

Through countless challenges and triumphs, Major General Balraj Mehta commanded his troops with unwavering dedication, instilling in them a shared sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Finally on 31st of August 2018 superannuated on having attained the age of 58 years and was given a dignified farewell by the then Chief of The Army Staff General Bipin Rawat.
